Frequently Asked Questions

Once a vein is destroyed, what happens to the blood that flowed in it?

The dead vein is then slowly absorbed by your body with the blood redirected to nearby healthy veins in your leg.

What’s the difference between a vein and an artery?

Arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart. Veins carry oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart.

Do you offer vein stripping?

Vein stripping is a surgical procedure for varicose veins which might only be offered ifEVLT or VenaSeal™ treatments are unsuitable. As a vascular surgeon, Dr Naji will undertake a detailed consultation to discuss the most suitable treatment for you.

Do I need to wear compression stockings after treatment?

Compression stockings post-treatment are designed to improve blood flow and circulation in your legs, prevent bruising and clots, and reduce any pain or swelling. You will be advised on whether you need to wear these and, if so, how long for.

Are my varicose veins likely to come back?

With sclerotherapy, results usually last one to three years at which point larger veins may recur. With EVLT or glue (VenaSeal™), the chance of veins coming back is very low.

However, there is always the chance that new varicose veins can develop over time, for instance, due to hormonal changes, pregnancy, weight gain, or if you are on your feet all day at work.

What’s the difference between rosacea and acne?

Both are common skin diseases but they need very different treatments.

Rosacea (acne rosacea) is characterized by an intense red rash, mainly on the face, that can come and go, and there may be papules, pustules, and swelling. Rosaceacan be worsened by sun exposure, heat, alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods.

Acne (acne vulgaris) is caused by excess oil production which clogs hair follicles and leads to inflammation, with pustules, blackheads and whiteheads.

What are the advantages of foam sclerotherapy compared to liquid sclerotherapy?

With foam sclerotherapy, the foam formulation is more visible on ultrasound and more effective in displacing blood in the vein. Another advantage is that it is a non-invasive procedure so you can drive home or return to your normal activities right away.

What does the sclerotherapy injection feel like?

A very fine needle is used: some patients describe the sensation as similar to a slightsting.

How will I know if this sclerotherapy treatment is suitable for me?

Our goal is to ensure that you have a positive experience, with the best possible outcome. You will receive a detailed consultation, which is free, to discuss your past medical history as well as your areas of concern. An ultrasound may be performed for a deeper investigation. Treatment options will be explained in detail, together with any potential side effects and post-treatment care

What is VenaSeal™ made of?

VenaSealTM is a medical-grade gluespecially created by Sapheon. It is a cyanoacrylate glue – a type of glue frequently used by doctors in the last fifty years torepair wounds and skin incisions. It is also used to seal diseased arteries.

What are the benefits of VenaSeal™?

Studies have shown VenaSeal™ to have an excellent success rate and a low risk of complications. The process is quick, taking around 30 minutes. Another advantage isthat the clinical glue quickly seals the vein shut, so that there is no need to wear compression stockings after the procedure.
